Story Of Shri ABRAHAM
Terah, the tribal leader of Hebrews died at Haran. When mourning days
were over, the tribal representatives visited Abraham, son of Terah, Abraham
dreamt about some loud words of Gods saying
"leave your country, your family and your father's house for the land. I will show to you, I will make a great nation. I will bless you and make your name famous that it will be used as a blessing".
Accordingly, Abraham along with his wife Sarah, left and wandered through hills and valleys eating wild fruits, drinking water from streams and sleeping under trees. Sarah was doubtful about God's blessings about land and children. Abraham said, it was not only a dream but the clear voice of God. Again Abraham heard God's voice saying
"Abraham, have no fear. I am the shield to your descendants. I shall give you this land".
Next morning Abraham offered fire (havan) to God, they wandered towards the land of Canaan as severe drought caused a famine. They went to Egypt looking for food. Years later, Abraham reached Negeb. By then he became a wealthy man. Abraham’s servant, Lot, chose the fertile valley of Jordan and settled in Sodom. Abraham got the desert land. Abraham heard a voice in a dream saying, "Abraham, come out I am going to give you a great reward. I will bless your children like stars in the sky. Sarah arranged for Hagar to bear a child for them. It was custom in those days. Hagar gave birth to a son named him Ishmael meant "God-heard". Years later Abraham heard the voice again, "Bear yourself blameless in my presence and I will make covenant between Myself and you. You shall become the father of a multitude of nations. Your name shall be Abraham and not Abram.
Months later in the middle of the day Abraham received some strangers. He
arranged a feast for them. At the end the strangers said,
"Next year this time your wife will give birth to a son".
Sarah laughed and said, "I
am eighty years old and Abraham is beyond ninety". "Sarah laugh, but
what I promised will happen," said the stranger. Next year a child was
blessed. Abraham said, "Eternally faithful and loving God, your ways are
so mysterious a child in our age. I shall name him Issac". Issac means
"he laughs".
As God directed to Abraham, he dismissed Hagar and Ishmael.
(Some where in here God to Abraham to sacrifice his son Issac as
dedication towards him). As he was going to sacrifice his son Issac, he heard
God's voice
"Abraham, do not harm the child. You have not refused me your only son. All the nations of earth shall be blessed by your descendants as a reward for your obedience".
